Alice walked down the lawn towards her usual eating spot at lunch. Under a large oak tree. It was here that she liked to read her usual book, Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carol. People around the school called her obsessive, crazy. Alice knew better though, everything about her tales were real, they weren’t make believe. She knew they were real.
More real than this world, she was just lucky that a few people didn’t think she was crazy. They weren’t many but they were the ones that counted. Her true friends in this world. Rebecca, Rosalyn, Cassie, Ryan and Wilbur Robinson.
“Good morning Alice.” Cassie waved to the girl.
Alice waved, moving a piece of her blond hair out of her face. Adjusting the book under her arm she made her way towards the group of smiling friends.
“Well, if it isn’t Miss Crazy!” a voice made her cringe. She turned to see the blond haired girl known as Cecilia, her blond hair was tied into a ponytail with a pink ribbon tying it together. As usual, she was wearing a pink poodle skirt with a white shirt tied with a pink ascot around her neck.
“Go away Cecilia. I am not in the mood.” Alice said quietly.
“Well, that’s too bad because I am in the mood to pick on you.” The girl smirked. “Having fun with your dorky friends?”
Alice wanted to say something, wanted to defend her friends. But her words were not coming out. “They are…not freaks…” she said nervously.
The fellow blond smirked and looked at Alice up and down. “Nice petticoat, you get that costume store?”
“Cecilia back off!” Cassie said coming up to Alice.
Wilbur and the others were starting to walk up to try to help out the situation. Alice felt horrible. They were always trying to help out, the situation was always like this. They help her. And her not helping them. She was and would always be just their crazy friend. A crowd was starting to form.
“What’s the matter?” Cecilia asked with a smirk. “So crazy, that you have to have your nerd herd help you out?” she flicked Alice across the forehead. “Why don’t you go back to that Wonderland world you’re always talking about. You would be the queen of freaks there!”
Alice felt her fingers clenched. Her eyes narrowed, the fine line between her being snapped. “Go to hell!” Alice snapped turning to Cecilia and punching her across the face. She had never used the words before especially now but she had had enough.
“You…you hit me!” Cecilia said in complete shock. “You hit me you freak!”
“About time someone did…” Rosalyn said.
Cecilia glared and pushed the other blond. Hard enough to knock Alice down into a mud puddle, getting mud everywhere. All over her dress. Alice glared at Cecilia through angry tears. She refused the help of Rebecca and started running as tears fell down her cheeks.
“Alice, come back!” Rebecca yelled.
Her cry fell on deaf ears. Alice was not going to come back not to anyone. She knew it would be the laughing stock for the rest of her life. She ran into the one place that she knew no one would judge her. The Library.
Burying herself into her books she let the tears fall onto the words. She couldn’t believe that she could actually be accepted here. No one would ever think of her as anyone else. She sniffed back her tears and looked up to see a boy hovering above her. A concerned look on his face.
“What…what do you want?” she asked with a glare. “Come to make fun of me too?”
“No…” the boy said slightly taken back. He handed her a towel, obviously wet. “I figured you would want to wipe the mud off your face…”
Alice blinked in surprise. “Umm…thanks I guess.” She took the towel. “I’m Alice.”
“Parker.” The boy said taking a seat beside her. “You okay?”
“I will never be anything more than a freak.” Alice sniffed back more tears. “I always will be!”
Parker blinked back confusion and gave her a tiny smile. “I don’t think so…I think you are different. Nothing wrong with being different.” He said. “Believe me I used to feel the same way.”
“You did?” Alice asked. “A cute boy like you?”
Parker nodded, rubbing the back of his head sheepishly. “I used to be made fun of for my squeaky voice, believe me Alice. You are perfect just the way you are.”
Alice felt a smile forming. Standing up she turned to the boy. “Thanks Parker. I think that helped.”
Parker nodded and watched the girl leave. Making his way back to his locker he heard a voice call for him.
“Hey Patch!” he turned to see Cassie, also known as his sister Cadpig running towards him. “I saw you talking to Alice, do you think she’ll be okay…”
Patch smiled, his goofy grin and nodded. “I think that she will be just fine…”
